Greg first visited the Enchantments during Golden Week in 1981 with the Starks and friend Bill Turner. Greg and Bill had spent the winter of 1979-80 as yahoos (workers paid in room and board and the opportunity to backcountry ski) at the Starks’ Scottish Lakes Ski Camps in the Washington Cascades west of Leavenworth. Greg met Kathi a year later and introduced her to both the Starks and Enchantments. The Starks’ 25th consecutive Golden Week in 1983 was the first for Greg and Kathi, who married the following summer. In 2007, the Shannons marked their own 25th consecutive trip into the Enchantments, Greg working as a wilderness ranger in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, which includes the Enchantments, during eleven of them (1988-1998). He has backpacked into the Enchantments at least 75 times. Now an acupuncturist in East Wenatchee (Harmony Acupuncture and Sound Healing), he continues his interest in photography and is entrusted with Bill Stark’s historical collection of Enchantment slides.

Kathi first wrote about the Starks in 1987 as a cover story for Washington Magazine, illustrated with photos by Greg. A modified version of one of her Enchantment essays, Bosom Buddies, won the 2009 Write on the River literary contest for nonfiction. She has a master’s of fine arts in creative writing from the Pacific Lutheran University Rainier Writing Workshop and teaches essay writing and works in community relations at Wenatchee Valley College.

Kathi and Greg celebrated their 30th consecutive Golden Week in the Enchantments in 2012. They live in Cashmere, Washington.
